Today on OPC Wednesday, I want to share another great video from Entrepreneur.com, in which Chris Brogan, social media expert among experts, shares tips on how small business can rock social media right out of the gate.

What I love about his advice is it’s easy to understand, and even better, simple to implement.  It might feel like a herculean task to get started on social media if you haven’t dipped your toe in the water yet, but it doesn’t have to be. Really.

There are a lot of great take-away nuggets in this short (3:26) video, so watch and enjoy!

Today on OPC Wednesday, I want to share a video I found on Entrepreneur.com, wherein a pastry chef shares how she used something called “crowdfunding” to raise money to open her business.

In the video, pastry chef and bakery owner Jessie Isaacs talks about how she turned customers into a funding source, after her initial investors backed out.

It’s an inspiring story, and proves that if you’re resourceful enough, you will find a way to fund your dream business.

Today on OPC Wednesday, I want to point you in the direction of another great round-up article, this one on how 9 small businesses are using social media marketing successfully, over on socialmediaexaminer.com. (A terrific site which I highly recommend, by the way!)

Creatives will want to pay particular attention to the first example, a wedding and nature photographer who has built a large following through his brilliant use of engagement strategies and resource sharing. For food-related businesses, check out case study #3, which outlines how an organic dessert company uses photos and promotions to drive sales and build their brand.

After each of the 9 case studies there’s a solid list of “key takeways” that will help you drill down and understand the particular elements that made each social media campaign successful. You could easily choose from among this list of techniques to start crafting your own social media marketing plan.

Today on OPC Wednesday, I want to point you in the direction of a great round-up article on how 6 businesses are using social media to drive sales over on Techcrunch.com. While some of the brands are big – Starbuck’s, Levi’s – there are two small food businesses among the 6 case studies here you might want to pay attention to.

There’s the former construction worker turned crème brulee expert with 12,000 Twitter followers who eagerly await his every update so they know where to find his food cart location for the day, then there’s the  small Korean restaurant using  Groupon and a very tiny Twitter and Facebook following to get both repeat business and new sales.

OPC (Other People’s Content): Randall Graham of Bonny Doon Vineyards Talks Social Media

(OPC is a semi-regular weekly feature on kdh.com, where once a week or so we check out “Other People’s Content” for lessons, tips and techniques you can use in your own creative small business.)

In this super short (2:42) video, the always interesting Randall Grahm talks to Austin Beeman of “Understanding Wine” about social media.

Even though he considers himself a “luddite” and a “technophobe,”  Graham still understands the importance of using social media. As he says here, to survive in the very crowded wine industry these days, you need to “build an intimate connection with the end consumer,” and you can use social media to make that happen.

Check out the rest of his wise insights here.

Image from Rickshaw Dumpling blog

Today on OPC Wednesday, I want to share a video I found on Entrepreneur.com, because it’s a great example of how restaurants can use social media to interact with customers and bring in business.

In the video, Kenny Lao of Rickshaw Dumpling, an Asian fast casual restaurant focused on dumplings, talks about how he uses social media to update his fans, how to pick the right message to convey, how to manage a social media schedule, and what kind of content to post.

One thing he mentions that’s spot-on for restaurants and other food purveyors is that your social media efforts are really about a shared experience around food, and extending that experience.

This is a short (3:15) video with some good ideas you can adapt for your own small business, so watch and enjoy, then implement!
